How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncturists believe the human body is comprised of a channel system, called meridians. There are 15 meridians, which flow up and down and around the body in order to maintain balance. Based on acupuncture theory, it is within the meridian system which illness and disease can manifest. Meridians may become compromised by lifestyle habits, genetics, or simply even the weather. Once the meridian system is disturbed, acupuncturists look for patterns which must be treated, in order to restore balance. Stimulation of carefully selected acupuncture points, with fine acupuncture needles, assist to bring the body back to balance.

Cupping

Cupping is a therapy that has been used in China for thousands of years, the method was originally called “horn method”. Originally, the modality started off by using cattle horns {hence the name} or bamboo. Now we are lucky enough to have convenient clean bamboo and glass cups that come in a variety of sizes. Today, cupping is used to treat many different imbalances {asthma, allergies, common cold, coughs, digestion disturbances, pelvic pain, skin conditions, and emotional imbalances just to name a few}.

Why is Acupuncture Effective?

We like to picture fine acupuncture needles as raindrops, creating ripples in the water, clearing away stagnation manifesting within the body. The beauty of acupuncture is that no treatment is ever exactly the same. Treatment is determined based on how the patients’ signs and symptoms present on that day, at that moment.

Remembering that we are all individuals. Acupuncture Atelier tailors each treatment specifically for you.

True story: needles scare me. It’s funny, too, because when I was little I was often in the hospital {had heart surgery at 4 months}. However, I’ve always managed to come to terms with them, just because I knew that whatever needle I was getting was helping me in some way {or at least figuring out what was wrong}. So that’s why I was 100% ready to try out the Acupuncture Atelier in Hoboken.
