The Pericardium is the sheath located around the Heart. In Chinese Medicine, the Pericardium is known as the Heart Protector and its primary function is to control boundaries. Perhaps it is due to the time of year (following the chaotic holiday season) but as of late, I often find myself treating the Pericardium energy.   Why is it so challenging to maintain healthy personal boundaries for ourselves during our day to day lives? Doing tasks we don’t want to do, going to events we don’t care to be at, or hanging out with friends who have become toxic for our wellbeing. We are all guilty of it. When it comes to being respectful to our own mind, body and spirit,…

When it comes to essential oils it is safe to say I have a bit of a collection. I personally use them daily and also find them to be extremely therapeutic in my clinical practice. In addition to acupuncture and Reiki, I use essential oils during each and every acupuncture healing session. All oils have their own healing properties and can be used for a variety of ailments. For instance, many are very effective for calming the nervous system and nurturing the Spirit.   Patients often ask me to recommend an oil for their daily use. My response is to always let their own bodies decide. Unless there is a very specific ailment they are seeking assistance with, there is…

Can’t Poop?

September 12, 2018

Everyone poops!  A true statement, sort of.  For many, pooping is the source of much stress and discomfort. The thought of a daily bowel movement is inconceivable. When it comes to Traditional Chinese Medicine {TCM} there are many diagnosis’s for chronic constipation. The regular offenders like Liver Qi Stagnation, Dampness, and Heat are typical. However, when the typical offenders are addressed and pooping still doesn’t happen, it’s time to think outside the box and consider the emotions. What are you holding onto? Why can you {literally} not let shit go? The digestive system is a direct manifestation of how you digest life. How do you process life? Are you able to move through each experience with ease? Do you live…

We are dominated by a goal oriented and evidenced based society. When it comes to health and medicine, the general population tend to turn to scientific facts for solutions. Answers are found by blood-work, urinalysis, and other laboratory studies. But what happens when everything comes back normal? What happens when there is no scientific based evidence as to why you and your partner have not been able to conceive? Is it possible that your mind is getting in the way of conception? Perhaps it is time to consider your mind and body as a whole. Being a goal oriented society, when it comes to fertility, the way we go about conception is really no different then how we manage deadlines…

Honest Insight from an Acupuncturist {and New Mom} It’s amazing how much information there is available about pregnancy, birth, and babies. What to expect books filled with week-by-week baby development details, labor and birthing expectations, rounded out by mentions of all the glamorous {ahem} postpartum health prospects. Despite the quantity of books, that’s about the gist of the information. Oddly, with all of the pressures about breastfeeding, it is hardly mentioned throughout the best selling prep books. It seems everyone is only happy to pass opinion, but no one actually discusses the details. To begin, let’s be clear, breastfeeding is hard. Breastfeeding is really really hard. It is exhausting, frustrating, painful, and at times you can feel the life being…

It happens twice a year, we set the clocks ahead one hour and then months later we set them back one hour. For many, springing ahead or falling behind is no big deal. However for some, waiting for the body to adjust to the change can be a challenging couple of weeks. During daylight savings time, it is not uncommon to experience fatigue, insomnia, sluggishness or generally feeling “off.” I am sure this all sounds very familiar to many people this week! So why is this one hour so dramatic? A Chinese Medicine explanation is that the Earth element is imbalanced. To begin, according to Chinese Medicine there are five elements {known as the Five Phase Theory} that manifest within…

With Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day happening this weekend, it’s the perfect time to write a special blog post about connecting with your Inner Goddess — that voice inside of every beautiful woman, the voice telling her who she is, what she needs, and what she wants. My mother would refer to it as “woman’s intuition,” and Shakira refers to it as her “she wolf — but no matter what you nickname her, it’s your Inner Goddess. Having trouble with the concept? Think about your female friends/co-workers/acquaintances, there’s always that one…there’s just something about her. She walks calmly, she seems to be smiling from her cheeks, she looks deep into the eyes of the person she speaks to, she knows…

The Gift of Listening

February 11, 2016

While shopping at a local grocer the other day, I was greeted by the cashier by the usual “hello ma’am, how are you?” I responded “I am well, how about yourself?” At which point he shot back “I can’t complain, but not like anyone would listen if I did.” Being an acupuncturist and Healer my heart sank for this man, I of course quickly responded back to him “well, I heard you.” He nodded and gave a gracious smile. This very brief exchange has stayed with me for over a week, it has caused me to think about how the act of listening is lacking in our society. Lending your ear is one of the greatest gifts we can give…

Editors Note: Before reading this post, it is very important to understand that the following is only one example of how neck pain can occur. No one person is a like and we need to always remember that. However, it was important to me to try and explain how acupuncture can effectively treat a very common condition. Chinese Medicine is not easily translated, when studying
