The 3rd Chakra / Manipura Chakra
“The window into your identity”

The Solar Plexus Chakra, the 3rd Chakra, or also known as the Manipura Chakra (in Sanskrit) is located between the diaphragm and the navel. The Solar Plexus Chakra is the center of our being, it is the window into our personal identity; how you see yourself as an individual in the universe.

When balanced, there is a clear perception of who you are and what you contribute as an individual in the universe. A flowing Solar Plexus Chakra provides not only a vision of contributions and ideas you may have, but it also provides the will behind the ideas to be put into action. The will, ties directly to personal identity and owning decisions with confidence. Not only do you have confidence in your decisions, but this Chakra also provides the ability to move fourth and act. Perhaps the Solar Plexus is how the term a “gut reaction” was named; reacting based solely on a feeling within the Solar Plexus. This confidence may also be viewed as self esteem; knowing who you are, what you want to accomplish, and standing by all that you are and all that you do. A healthy Solar Plexus Chakra allows one to stand up straight and walk a path with confidence.

When unbalanced, a persons identity will not be well defined. A true lack of confidence would be display along with an indecisive nature. The Solar Plexus gives us the ability to see what path we want to travel on our journey, if it is unbalanced the path is unclear and may even be painted with distractions from another persons path. Those who are easily manipulated or tend to follow along with others decisions likely have an unbalanced Solar Plexus.

Chinese Medicine

According to Chinese Medicine, the energetic functions of the digestive organs relate to the Solar Plexus {i.e. Spleen, Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder}. To start, it is important to know in Chinese Medicine the Spleen and Stomach are paired, and the Liver and Gallbladder are paired.

Stomach & Spleen
The Stomach and Spleen energy is intellect and pensiveness. This energy promotes the ability for one to be insightful and to harvest {or digest} ideas. This energy can be full of profound wisdom for some. However, also within this energy is the tendency to become obsessive or worried. This imbalance manifests as becoming absolutely consumed by thought so much, that you can no longer calm your mind to see the clear picture. On the other spectrum, when this energy is deficient there will be lack of thought or perhaps the inability to be creative or inspired.

Gallbladder & Liver
The Liver and Gallbladder energy is the ability to control. This energy is essential to keep structure and movement throughout life. When balanced this energy allows for thoughtful decision making, along with sound judgement, and the ability to plan ahead. However, when unbalanced this energy could manifest as an over-controlling and angry personality {think road rage or anger when things don’t go as planned}. This type of imbalance can lead to anxieties when a person is met with a situation that they are not in complete control of. They have lost the ability to move with the energy of their true self, they instead are fighting the momentum of life and are now stuck.

Digest This

Given the location of the Chakra and all of the digestive organs involvement, clearly gut health is of importance when balancing the Solar Plexus. Making healthy food choices for yourself helps keep the Chakra balanced. Think about it, eating fatty or greasy foods causes the digestive organs to work harder to push it through the body, leaving less of their energy to be thoughtful or decisive. Food is fuel, putting clean foods into your body is an easy way to keep those energies active. Perhaps the reason behind emotional eating or eating disorders is that the Solar Plexus is imbalanced? Next time you feel like partaking in some activities your digestive organs may not appreciate, think about why you actually want to eat that food…is there an emotion tied to the craving?

Lastly, when trying to understand the Solar Plexus it is important to understand that the act of digestion is also a transformation. Think of the great power behind this Chakra, the ability to digest all ideas and thoughts in order to transform them all into action and reality. When this Chakra is balanced the window to the soul is clear and active. Knowing who you are means you also have the ability to make the intuitive {gut feeling} decisions to confidently live your life’s true path.

Stay Healthy & Balanced!
